Case study: Bosawas Reserve Outgrower Project, Nicaragua
01/01/01
A SMS-nurtured agroforestry project of NicaFrance Foundation, with support and collaboration from the Moringa Fund, Cornell University, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Rainforest Alliance to promote agro-forestry and reverse deforestation, encompasses 138 farms all surveyed with data from SMS Integrity.
This project serves as a pilot that supports the Nicaraguan government’s response to the Bonn Challenge, and the World Resource Institute (WRI) 20×20 Initiative, that aims to restore 2.7 million hectares of forests across Nicaragua, with the Bosawas Region as its primary focus.
Tropical deforestation accounts for about 10 percent of the world’s heat-trapping emissions. We can significantly lower global warming emissions and play an integral role in a comprehensive, long-term solution to global warming.
Arabica and Robusta coffee plants, developed by the ECOM Cirad partnership, as well as tree species for shade and timber are propagated and distributed employing and training farmers and local workers in the community. The project will sequester 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide and rejuvenate coffee farms and forests. Most importantly, it will allow trained farmers to reclaim lost lands and to pursue a thriving, stable business, thus contributing to the creation of rural prosperity and shared values.
