Official Rollout of our Carbon Calculator, Green Meter!
We are pleased to announce the official rollout of our internal carbon calculator, Green Meter, which has now been third-party reviewed by SustainCERT. This is a significant step forward in our journey towards sustainability, as it reflects our commitment to transparency and accountability in our supply chains.
What is Green Meter?
Green Meter is a tool developed specifically for ECOM to calculate the carbon footprint of key commodities—cocoa, coffee, and cotton—across our supply chain. Aligned with the globally recognized reporting standards of the GHG Protocol, this tool provides accurate carbon footprint data at various levels—per project, per country, and per commodity. It captures complex carbon flows by estimating emissions and removals from farms, cooperatives, and processing facilities. Green Meter was developed in collaboration with a carbon expert consultant, Meo Carbon Solutions, tailored precisely to meet the unique needs of our supply chain.
Built with Ground-Level Insights and SMS Expertise
What makes Green Meter unique is its development process, which has been heavily informed by the expertise and insights of our teams around the globe. Many of our SMS managers and teams contributed significantly to its creation, ensuring the tool reflects real-world operations. Over the past few months, we’ve held in-person training sessions in Ghana, CIV, Uganda, Peru, Colombia, and Costa Rica, with upcoming sessions in Mexico and Brazil. Online training has also been provided for teams in Indonesia, India, China, and Ethiopia. Feedback from these sessions, along with the development of multilingual surveys on surveyCTO, has been invaluable in refining Green Meter.
What Can Green Meter Provide?
Green Meter is designed to offer a comprehensive analysis of carbon emissions and removals across our supply chain. Key capabilities include:
- 1. Supply Chain Carbon Footprint: Detailed calculation of carbon footprints per client supply chain and origin.
- 2. Total Emissions and Carbon Footprint: Estimates total emissions at the farm level, across samples, and for the full project scope.
- 3. Emission Category Breakdown: Detailed breakdown of results by emission category and archetype, helping to identify the most impactful areas and track intervention progress.
Importantly, Green Meter is available to clients without a license fee, though data collection and calculation costs should be considered in project budgets.
A Unique Tool for a Global Standard
Green Meter stands out because it combines local insights with global standards. It has been developed from the ground up, incorporating knowledge from our operations in various origins, yet aligns with globally recognized standards, including GHGP LSRG and other associated GHG standards.
We want to extend our thanks to everyone who has contributed to this project, especially the technical team in Ghana, for their excellent support and commitment in developing and adapting the surveys for Green Meter data collection on surveyCTO.
Next Steps
We encourage all teams to utilize Green Meter to its fullest potential. If you know of clients who are interested in measuring their carbon footprint within our supply chains and reducing emissions over time, please get in touch. Together, we can help them understand the benefits of this tool and explore opportunities for project collaboration.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication as we work towards a more sustainable and Net-Zero future.
Warm regards,
The ECOM Climate team
