ECOM partners with China Ministry of Environment for low-carbon coffee initiatives
Article by: Haiya Zhang
Last spring, our colleagues Haiya Zhang, SMS Manager in China, and Laurent Bossolasco, Global SMS Manager for China, represented ECOM in to Beijing as they formally established a partnership with China Ministry of Environment Foreign Cooperation Centre (FECO).
Indeed ECOM has partnered with FECO to deliver tailored carbon footprint calculations for coffee from China and provide shade tree advice tools and other knowledge resources to Chinese coffee farmers.
ECOM and FECO will be working together to conduct pilot demonstrations of low-carbon communities in the Chinese province of Yunnan, exploring solutions for low-carbon coffee communities in order to address climate change, and promoting the construction of a green value chain for the coffee industry.
Additionally, both sides will carry out capacity-building activities among stakeholders, including policy researchers and coffee producing communities, encouraging their participation in sustainable coffee production and consumption, enhancing the capacity of sustainable coffee communities to cope with climate change, and promoting low-carbon and resilient community development.
Finally, ECOM and FECO will jointly develop coffee and shade trees that are suitable to China’s climate and soil conditions, and that are adapted for Chinese coffee farmers. Together, these efforts will pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient coffee industry in China.
