Public welfare activities for students in Chinese coffee communities

On April 18, the Sustainable Management Service (SMS) department of Pu'er Tianchen Coffee Co., Ltd., and delegates went to Pu'er Special Education School to carry out public welfare activities to build the capacity of coffee community students. In order to improve the vocational skills of disabled students and enable them to master a skill.

Pu'Er Special Education School is a public schooll serving students with physical and devemoplement disabilities. Out of the total 231 students, 67 students come from coffee farming families. During the event, Pu'er Tianchen Coffee Co., Ltd. provided the school with 40 3-year-old high-quality coffee seedlings, 20 movable floor-standing pots, as well as some fertilizers and substrates required for planting for free, and selected technical instructors to target the school's hearing-impaired vocational high school students. Students were trained in coffee planting techniques. The instructor first introduced to the students the varieties and ages of coffee seedlings, and then explained in detail the spacing of coffee tree planting, the depth of digging pits, how to fertilize coffee trees and other technical essentials, and then taught the students step by step of on-site planting practice. Through the joint efforts of both parties, 40 fresh coffee seedlings have settled in the school.

This activity not only allowed students to learn and master the skills and essentials of coffee tree planting, but also enhanced their in-depth understanding of the specialty crops of their hometown. Students truly experienced practical education by planting coffee trees, fertilizing, and watering them with their own hands. Concerning the true meaning of vocational skills training , students expressed their intention to take coffee planting knowledge home and bring it to their parents, so as to increase their own and local coffee planting output.

In the next step, Pu'er Tianchen Coffee Co., Ltd. will carry out a series of activities such as "Coffee Professional Knowledge into Campus" classroom teaching practice observations with schools, and fully support disabled students with practical actions to carry out public welfare training on coffee skills capacity building. We hope that the continued development of this event will take root and thrive in Pu'er City Special Education School like the lush and vibrant coffee seedlings!

Weeding out problem plants

Weeds can be a real problem for coffee farmers. Those with deep root systems compete with coffee trees for nutrients, reducing yields. However, weeds with shallow roots can help with water and nutrient retention and by increasing soil microbial diversity, which can help lead to higher yields for farmers.
