Strengthening the knowledge of cacao producers in Peru
Article by Cecilia
In an effort to promote sustainable improvement in cocoa production, ECOM Peru brought together associated producers in an enriching field event on January 30 and 31 in the Huánuco region. These sessions focused on key issues to improve the quality and sustainability of cocoa production in the region.
The event became a key platform to address essential issues, including:
- 1. Bean Quality
Exploration of standards and characteristics that define cocoa quality, including size, moisture content, color, aroma and flavor. High bean quality is crucial to obtain top-notch final cocoa products.
- 2. Integrated Pest Management:
Introduction of practices that combine biological, chemical and cultural methods to control pests effectively and sustainably. The objective is to reduce the use of chemical pesticides, minimize environmental impact and ensure optimal production.
- 3. Certifications:
Guidance on the processes for evaluating and awarding seals of approval to agricultural products that meet social, environmental and quality standards. Certifications may address issues such as sustainable agricultural practices, fair labor conditions and environmental conservation.
- 4. Financial Education:
Provide producers with tools and knowledge on economic and financial management. This includes training in budgeting, basic accounting, income and expense management, and long-term financial planning, which are crucial for the economic stability and growth of cocoa producers.
- 5. Preparation of Biol:
To highlight the collaboration with the MOCCA Project to teach the elaboration of biol, an organic fertilizer that uses biodegradable materials to improve soil fertility, promote plant growth and combat diseases. Biol also strengthens crop resistance to pests and diseases.
The January 30 session was held at the farm of producer Aquiles Puente, in the Shitari sector, district of Monzón. Meanwhile, the January 31 session was held at the farm of Mr. Juan Albino Chaupus, in the Shiringal sector, Pueblo Nuevo district, both in the Huanuco region.
This initiative reflects ECOM's commitment to improving the quality of life and sustainability of cocoa production in the region. It marks the beginning of a series of programs planned throughout the year in the main producing areas, consolidating the ongoing commitment to the company's core values.

Weeds can be a real problem for coffee farmers. Those with deep root systems compete with coffee trees for nutrients, reducing yields. However, weeds with shallow roots can help with water and nutrient retention and by increasing soil microbial diversity, which can help lead to higher yields for farmers.
