Better Cocoa for the Planet: Reducing Deforestation in Our Supply Chain
Cocoa production has been linked to high rates of deforestation and biodiversity loss, making it a significant contributor to environmental degradation. Addressing and mitigating these negative impacts is essential for achieving a more sustainable cocoa supply chain.
At ECOM, we are committed to addressing these challenges by promoting practices that protect forests and strengthen cocoa supply chains.
One of the ways we do so is by applying a standardized methodology, developed by World Resources Institute (WRI), to ensure our cocoa beans are sustainably sourced and are not linked to forest loss.
Another key way we address these challenges is through our collaboration with Global Forest Watch, where we use data-driven tools to assess deforestation risks, engage smallholders, and promote practices that protect forests and strengthen cocoa supply chains.
By integrating real-time data into our supply chain, we work closely with farmers to implement sustainable practices that protect forests while ensuring long-term productivity. Learn more about our work towards a deforestation-free cocoa sector in the full article here, co-authored by members of the ECOM Sustainability team.
