Measuring the Carbon Impact of Agroforestry in Coffee Production

Coffee is one of the crops most vulnerable to climate change, with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and soil degradation threatening both productivity and farmer livelihoods.

One way to address this challenge is through agroforestry– integrating trees into farms– to build climate-resilient crops while enhancing carbon removals.

Through our collaboration with Chloris Geospatial, we assess the carbon benefits of our agroforestry efforts in coffee production. Most recently, we measured the carbon removals from vegetation growth in a 20.3-hectare (ha) coffee landscape in Matagalpa, Nicaragua.

The satellite images above illustrate biomass growth in 2014 compared to 2023.

The result from this particular coffee shows a removal of 2,180 tonnes of CO₂e from the atmosphere– equivalent to taking about 480 cars off the road for a year.

We are proud to work alongside Chloris Geospatial to measure the carbon benefits of agroforestry in coffee production. By leveraging satellite-driven insights, we can better scale nature-based solutions that enhance resilience and traceability across our supply chains.
