Seeds of Change: Expanding Coffee Cultivation in Papua New Guinea

In collaboration with the University of Goroka, Monpi Coffee Export Limited (MCEL), our specialty coffee brand in Papua New Guinea, is establishing a new coffee nursery aimed at strengthening local coffee production. Once fully operational, the nursery is expected to produce 15,000 coffee seedlings annually, contributing to a broader network of 400,000 seedlings from Monpi-affiliated nurseries.

To support local smallholders, these seedlings will be distributed free of charge, reinforcing our commitment to strengthening Papua New Guinea’s agricultural sector. The nursery will follow organic principles, ensuring that no synthetic chemicals are used, while compost is sourced naturally and is free from industrial farming inputs. This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices, which we believe are essential for the long-term health of both our farmers and the land.

This initiative also responds to a critical challenge faced by coffee growers—declining productivity levels. By providing farmers with high-quality seedlings and technical support, Monpi Coffee aims to enhance yields and improve livelihoods.

In addition, Monpi Coffee is advancing efforts to introduce new coffee varieties from Latin America to Papua New Guinea. Developed through extensive research by CIRAD and ECOM, these varieties are specifically suited to the country’s unique microclimates and soil conditions. We are confident that their introduction is an important step in ensuring greater resilience and productivity for the coffee growers we work alongside.
